What We Do

The Department of Teaching and Assessment focuses on coordination and evaluation of:
 v     Library Media Services
 v     Early Childhood programs and opportunities
 v     English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
          /Transitional Language Program (TLP)
 v     Elementary Reading/Language Arts programs and
          curriculum
 v     Elementary Mathematics and Science programs and
          curriculum
 

District Curriculum Specialists supervise the Early Childhood programs as well as Reading/Language Arts, Mathematics and Science.  A Department Supervisor provides oversight for Library Media Services, the English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Transitional Language Program (TLP) are managed by a district coordinator.  Together, they focus on designing curriculum, researching best practices and providing teachers with professional development and materials as they work to provide the highest quality instruction that will positively impact student achievement. 

In addition to coordinating the services noted above, the Director of Teaching and Assessment writes, evaluates and manages budgets for consolidated, ESOL and bilingual grants; oversees elementary curriculum writing in mathematics, science, social studies, reading/language arts; supervises the K – 12 reading support program which includes Early Intervention Teachers and Tutors, Reading Tutors and Reading Specialists; coordinates Pre K – grade 5 professional development opportunities; and oversees the building Curriculum Specialists in fulfilling their district responsibilities.  The Director of Teaching and Assessment also creates the district assessment calendar with input from various constituencies and provides oversight for the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) and Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT).
