West Hartford Public Schools has initiated a Green Cleaning Program, in order to reduce the chance of exposure for anyone using WHPS facilities, from produces that might adversely affect human health and the environment.

Scott Ferguson, an English teacher at Hall High School who has been with the district since 2002, has been named West Hartford Teacher of the Year for 2010.
Celebrate! West Hartford is an annual event held each June, at 50 South Main Street. This year’s entertainment will feature performances by bands from King Philip and Sedgwick middle schools as well as Conard and Hall high schools.
The Foundation for West Hartford Public Schools announced on May 11, 2010 that a Special Initiative Grant  in the amount of $10,000 has been awarded to the Conard High School Technology and Science Departments to help establish an Alternative Energy Technology Awareness Lab and Community Display
The Connecticut Consortium for Law and Citizenship Education has announced Hall High School has won the 2010 State Mock Trial championship (see picture of winning team on the front page).

Earth Day was celebrated this April, and West Hartford Public Schools went green both figuratively and literally, saving taxpayer dollars and teaching conservation by example.
The first annual West Hartford Middle School Spelling Bee will be held on Friday, May 21st.

Dr. Ellen Stokoe, Principal of Morley Elementary School, has been named National Distinguished Principal by the Connecticut Association of Schools.  At Conard High School, Dr. Peter Cummings, a principal in the Farmington school system, has been named to follow Tom Moore when he moves to his new Assistant Superintendent of Administration position in July.
The Looking in Theatre of the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts will visit three West Hartford middle schools this spring.  The theater group is composed of high school students who present dramatic scenes dealing with important social, family and personal issues such as bullying, sexuality, substance abuse, suicide and how these issues affect adolescents.

On April 12, at 7pm, Hall High School will host a Hall vs. Conard Faculty Basketball Game with other fun competitions between the students.  All proceeds benefit the American Red Cross Relief Efforts in Haiti.
Charlie McMahon, an 8th grade student at Bristow Middle School, has been named by the National Geographic Society as a semifinalist in the Connecticut Geographic Bee competition.

Seven Webster Hill Elementary School students have won a spot at a world competition for problem solving. This third grade team competed in the Odyssey of the Mind Statewide Finals and took second place among elementary schools in Connecticut.
Dr. Ellen Stokoe, Principal of Morley School is one of three finalists for the CT Association of Schools (CAS) Elementary Principal of the Year.
Duffy School has been selected as one of 20 National Finalists for the 2010 National Schools of Character (NSOC) awards program.  The selection was made from among 166 applications. 
Two long-term volunteer tutors, Don Grosso and Bernie Gatzen, are being honored at the March Connecticut Association of Schools Volunteer Recognition Banquet.
Katherine Gillis, a 5th grade student at Morley Elementary School, was honored March 3rd by Governor Jodi Rell for her Veterans Day writing assignment which evolved into a haunting poem and video.
West Hartford offers two elementary magnet schools open by lottery to any West Hartford student - Charter Oak International Academy and Smith School of Science, Math and Technology.

Joanne Barry-Dutro, art teacher at Hall High School, has been named Outstanding Connecticut Art Educator for 2010 by the Connecticut Art Education Association.
Conard High School has been named a second runner-up in the 2009 Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) Live Green – Win Green student competition, earning the school a $5,000 grant to fund future environmental improvements at Conard.

The Connecticut General Assembly recently passed Public Act 09-199, which obligates the state Department of Public Safety to notify school superintendents whenever a sex offender is released within their school district.

The Morley School Red Wagon food drive to benefit the West Hartford Food Pantry kicked off its 15th annual event on November 18th.
The public is invited to attend a Regional School Choice Fair to be held on Thursday, December 10, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., at Avon High School, 510 West Avon Road, Avon.
