CONNECTICUT LANGUAGE TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Juan Melian, of the Conard High School World Languages Department, has been selected as the Language Teacher of the Year by the Connecticut Council of Language Teachers.
Juan has been a West Hartford Public Schools teacher since 1997 when he began teaching Spanish at Sedgwick Middle School. In 2002, he moved to Conard High School where he continues to teach all levels of Spanish including the Advanced Placement Spanish Language classes. Before teaching in West Hartford, “Señor” taught K-12 Spanish in New York. Prior to that, he taught ESL to learners at all levels at his own academy in the Canary Islands, Spain, where he was born. Juan has also taught Spanish as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Hartford.
Juan is a World Languages Methods Instructor as part of the Alternate Route to Certification Program, the program from which he graduated after earning a law degree in Spain. ARC is an intensive program for talented individuals who wish to become classroom teachers.
A 1990 graduate of the Universidad de Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain, Juan continued his studies at Central Connecticut State University, where he earned his Masters degree in International Studies specializing in Latin American Studies in 2006. He is currently working on his 6th Year Degree at Sacred Heart University.
