Bulkeley High School of Hartford was chosen as the winner, taking the top $20,000 grant. Two other Connecticut high schools –Staples High School in Westport and Wilby High School in Waterbury – were also selected as runners-up.
The CL&P Live Green – Win Green contest was open to all high schools within CL&P’s service area. It encourages students to consider sustainable, environmental projects designed to make their schools operate in a more environmentally beneficial manner. Students were challenged to demonstrate in a two-minute video and accompanying essay what their school currently does to conserve energy and be more environmentally responsible, and to propose a significant future “green” project they would like to implement at their school.
The entries were judged by a distinguished panel of Connecticut educators and environmental leaders, including Dr. Elsa Nunez, president of Eastern Connecticut State University and Dennis Carrithers, assistant executive director for high school programs at the Connecticut Association of Schools.
Conard High School was the runaway winner in the People’s Choice voting in the contest, winning a landslide vote on the CL&P website in December.
“We are pleased to congratulate Conard High School and the many students and faculty who worked so diligently on their video project for their recognition as the People’s Choice winner. At CL&P, we believe that the lifelong changes needed to conserve energy and protect the environment begin with encouraging our youth,” said Jeff Butler, CL&P president and chief operating officer.
