                                                                      Honors Pre-Calculus Course Description

This course is a more rigorous approach to elementary mathematical analysis than Pre-Calculus 1,2.

Emphasis is placed upon the study of vectors in both the plane and space and on functions including

circular, exponential and logarithmic. Topics such as analytic geometry, conic sections and other

coordinate systems are covered. In all topics, students are expected to use a variety of analytical

techniques to solve problems. These topics are in preparation for the study of calculus.

Attendance:  You are responsible for all material covered during an absence.

                                     >> contact me or a classmate for missed assignments / notes due to an

excused absence. Missed work must be made up promptly  (1-2days)

                                    >> no credit (grade of zero) will be given for missed assignments, quizzes,

tests,  ....  due to an unexcused absence.

Class Behavior:  RESPECT (for me and your classmates). Your success in this class will

                                        greatly depend on the following:

                                          >> paying attention during class explanations

                                          >> doing your assignments daily

                                          >> studying for quizzes / test

                                          >> asking questions about unclear concepts / material

Preparation:  You must come to class ON TIME (tardiness will result in detentions per

school policy) and PREPARED with covered text, notebook, completed

                                       assignments, pencil / pen , calculator, ....

Homework:  All assignments are expected to be done daily and checked regularly.

Some assignments (graded homework assignments) will be collected,

graded, and averaged in with your quizzes / tests.  GHA’s that are 1 day late will

lose half of their earned credit ; 2 days late will earn no credit (grade of zero)

                                                                                     (over)

Grading:    Based on total points of the following:

                                 >> Tests (usually 55-65 pt range)

                                 >> Quizzes (usually 30-40 pt range)

                                 >> Graded Homework Assignments

                                 >> Semester Avg  =  Qtr Avg (40%)  +  Qtr Avg (40%)  + Sem Exam (20%)

                                 >>  There is no “retaking” of quizzes nor tests.  Please do not ask !

Extra Help:  Seek help immediately !!!  I will be available after school most days. Please

let me know when you would like to meet so I can check my availability.

(my office is in room C221).  I also have a study hall period 5 (Rm C214)

West Hartford Public High Schools Mathematics Mission Statement

West Hartford Public High School’s mathematics program embraces a rigorous and challenging

curriculum, which promotes understanding, problem solving, and conjecturing and communication

about mathematical concepts. All students are engaged in learning mathematics in a productive, inter-

active and technologically enhanced environment. Teachers hold high expectations for students, allowing

them sufficient opportunities to practice and achieve, with the outcome of students’ learning mathematics

                                       with understanding.

By the end of high school, students will apply a range of numerical, algebraic, geometric, and statistical

concepts and skills to formulate, analyze and solve real world problems. The program will facilitate

inquiry and exploration of real world phenomena, offer authentic and diverse forms of assessment and

support continued development and appreciation of mathematics as a discipline.

William H. Hall High School Mission Statement

along with intellectual, artistic, social, emotional and physical development of each student in a safe

environment conductive to learning. Our programs recognize diverse student backgrounds, interests,

abilities, and learning styles. Our curricula challenge students, stimulate creative and critical thinking

and promote the pursuit of lifelong learning. We actively involve the community in a variety of ways.

Finally, we encourage students to be well-informed and responsible citizens who are prepared to respond
