FOUNDATIONS CLASSES

As a result of the recent site planning at Hall, we have instituted a number of initiatives to address concerns raised by parents, students, and teachers. One such initiative is the first year Foundations class in ninth grade English, social studies and science. This program, designed to focus on close reading and subject specific skills, grew out of a shared concern that placing some students with weaker reading skills in standard classes would not encourage either their academic or affective growth. In each subject, students are focusing on inferring, summarizing, and predicting strategies to improve reading skills; and subject specific skills such as map projecting, graph selecting, graphic organizing, and following the scientific method. The teachers also are working on time management and organizational skills as well as study strategies such as note taking and building responsibility for personal and class preparedness.

At this point, we are pleased with the commitment of both the teachers and the students to the program and to nurturing student growth. It is our belief that as the students work their way through the ninth and tenth grade classes, their improved skills will allow them to meet with success in the junior and senior elective program. If anyone has any questions about the program, please contact Dr. Cheney, Mr. Meehan or Mr. Poppe.

I would like to thank Mr. Meehan, English Department Supervisor, for this update on the foundation course.

This is the time to give thanks and count the many blessings in our community as we conclude the 20th century. We are grateful for our wonderful student body, our caring faculty and staff, and our parent and PTO volunteers for their continued support.

Peace Health Happy New Year

Jerry S. Copsinis

Interim Principal

The PTO Newsletter was converted to electronic format through a method called OCR. Optical Character Recognition attempts to convert a scanned image of text into a computer file. This method has varying levels of accuracy depending on the quality of documents scanned. Every effort has been made to correct any errors but due to time constraints some spelling mistakes might still exist.
