Many families lived in log cabins. A farm family might of
created a larger wooden cabin or a brick home. Rich people lived
in huge farms called plantations. The farmers grew corn and beans
for their food. They raised hogs, chickens, and cows. Girls
helped their mothers cook and make clothes. Boys helped their
fathers do the heavy work on the farm. The children did not go to
school. Their parents used the Bible to their children reading and
writing. Wealthy boys received an education from tutors or in
private schools. Some boys went to college. Children played
games like soccer and baseball. Horse racing was a game that
adults liked to play. Families enjoyed "Punch and Judy" the puppet
shows.
