Back to Colonial Home Why Did the Colonists Break Away from England?
People from England needed more money when the French and Indian war happened. They needed to pay for the weapons and other necessary items for the war. So, the people in England raised the tax on lots of things like sugar, paper, tea, and more. Colonists didn't think it would be fair to other people. They didn't like the idea of doing that, so the colonists and some indians dumped a shipload of British tea into the Boston Harbor. Then, that was known as the Boston Tea Party. After the colonists did that, the British and the Colonists went to war. The war they had was called the Revolutionary War or the American Revolution. When the war was still on, the colonists made a government called the Continental Congress. The congress made the Declaration of Independence to say that America was breaking free from England.
