Back to Colonial Home Who Were the Colonists?
The Thirteen Colonies were under the rule of the Kings and Queens. Most of the Colonists were English. Some people from Scotland, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, plus many more countries also came to America and they were colonists too. These colonists came to America for the same reason as the English. They brought people to the colonies to work for the people who owned them. The slaves were black people from Africa. The first slaves were sent to Virginia in 1619. After a while, all of the Thirteen Colonies had slaves to work for them. More people from different religions came to America and with more people, the population grew. By 1700, there was about 250,000 people living in America.
