                What were the colonies? Spain found the first colony, although England was the main country to colonize. They built their first colony in 1585 in what is now North Carolina. In 1607, the English built Jamestown, there first American settlement that lasted. The pilgrims built the second, known as the Plymouth Colony in what is now Massachusetts. Many pilgrims died, but the Indians helped some survive, by treating them with medicine. In thanks, the pilgrims had a feast which is known as Thanksgiving. England founded 11 more colonies known as New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Rhode Island, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. These became Together these became known as the thirteen colonies.
