Program Description

Philosophy

The Wolcott Elementary School Library Media Service program supports and enriches the curriculum and goals of the school.  The program provides a facility containing a full range of media and technologies.  The content and format of the collection reflects human diversity, and the program enhances respect for and appreciation of that diversity as well as endorsement of all human rights.

The program develops an awareness that libraries are crucial in accessing informational resources and services which help people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to learn grow and to prosper in a world community.

Curriculum

Central Focus: To assist students and teachers in solving information problems and/or questions and to develop a strong foundation in literature.

K-2 Program:

Develop an appreciation of literature and a variety of authors

Introduce the location of information within a library media center

Introduce organization of library resources, including alphabetical order, parts of a book, and location of books and other resources

Introduce multimedia resources and technology, including use of the Internet

3-5 Program:

Develop the use of the Big6 Skills in problem solving and research

Learn to locate information in a variety of sources including books, periodicals and multimedia resources

Appreciate literature and learn differences in literary genre

Use access tools such as the card catalog system, computer resources, etc.

Use multimedia resources and technology, including use of the internet
