Our Outdoor Classroom
  • Reclaimed by our school several years ago, we have transformed this forest and pond into an outdoor adventure land for children

  • Complete with…
    • Amphitheatre
    • Stumpy Classroom
    • Louise's Garden
    • Foot Paths
    • Small Stocked Fish Pond (soon with dock)

Fun Science
  • Wolcott Pond

6
Wouldn’t it be FUN if ...
  • Wolcott Pond could . . .

    • have a greater diversity of fish species
7
Water Temperature & Fish Health
  • Fish are ectotherms (Cold Blooded)
    • Animals that have a body temperature that is dependant on the environmental temperature

  • Because of this …
    • Environmental temperatures have a large effect on fishes health
8
What does warm water cause?
  • Fishes bodies have to work harder
    • Uses more oxygen from the water
9
What else?
  • PLUS warm water holds less oxygen!
10
How deep is our pond?

What to test?
15
Necessary Tools
  • Temperature & Light Sensor
  • Records every: 1 second to 18 hours
  • Store approximately 52,000 readings
  • Waterproof to 100 feet
  • Data download via PC Reader

  • Temperature Specifications
  •       • Range: -4° to 158°F (Air); -4° to 122°F (Water)
  •       • Accuracy: 0.85°F at 77°F
  • Light Intensity Specifications
  •       • Range: 0—30,000 lumens (60 watt light bulb = 840 lumens)

"Our Pond Has …"
  • Our Pond Has …

    • Algae blooms

    • Stagnant, inadequate mixing

    • High nutrient levels
      • Fertilizers
      • Leaves

    • Ice Over
  • Can Lead To …

    • Low oxygen levels

    • Poor smell or odor

    • Large fish kill
36
The Solution
  • Reduces algae growth

  • Circulates water

  • Nutrient breakdown

  • Winter ice opening

  • Improve water clarity

  • Healthier fish
37
Proposal – Windmill Pond Aerator
  • How it works -
  • Bellow pump on windmill head forces air to the bottom of the pond. An air diffuser dissolves air into tiny rejuvenating air bubbles.

  • Free pond aeration –                  no electricity req’d

  • Starts up at 3 - 5 mph wind speed
38
Neighbor’s Polled
  • An informal polling was done at the Clean and Clear in May
  • All neighbors along Wolcott Road were in favor of the windmill
39
Low Maintenance
  • Very little to no maintenance
    • Grease the 3 bearings in the compressor every few years

  • Bellow is made by Goodyear – expected life 10 to 15 years

  • No freeze control needed for Bellows type pumps (Unlike diaphragm type pumps)
