Kevin Henkes Author Study

Introduction:
 Have you ever wanted to be an author of your own book?  Well this is your chance.  First you will learn about a wonderful author named Kevin Henkes.  You will read about  him and the many books he has written.  You will discover the wonderful illustrations in Kevin Henkes’ books and explore the structure of his stories.

Task:
You can create a book of your own, using story elements such as characters, plot, setting, problem and solution.  You can also illustrate your own book and created a cover and a title page. Or you can review two of Kevin Henkes’ books.  Explain why you like or did not like the books. Then make connections between the books.  For example, were there similarities in any of the settings, characters or story plots.

  You will examine the illustrations and think about how they relate to the
 story.

You will fill out the story element chart for one of Kevin Henkes’ books
         (The
  teacher, using one of Kevin Henkes’ books, will model this for the 
           students.)

  You will fill out the story element chart for your own book. You have to
           decide whom your character or characters are going to be, where the
            story will take place, what the plot, problem and solution will be.

You will fill out the sequence chart, to help you sequence your story.

  You will write a review on two of the books you read. You must include a
        summary of the story, and explain if you enjoyed the books, why or why
        not.

Evaluation:

The criteria for evaluating the project will be decided jointly by students and teacher. You will be filling out your own rubric. Check out the rubric page.
