Providing Specialized Instruction

We use many approaches to collect information about what our children know and how they learn. This careful and continuous attention to assessment combines data from multiple sources: standardized tests, curriculum based measures including district assessments, student/parent/teacher interviews, and data collection of student performance within everyday contexts. Information gleaned from these sources then assist us in making meaningful instructional decisions that maximize student achievement.

Using the West Hartford Public Schools curriculum and Connecticut state standards as our road map, our instruction is designed in a way that provides explicit and systematic learning opportunities for our students. Modifications and scaffolding occur to ensure that all our students can access the curriculum and participate. Effective motivational strategies and direct instruction of cognitive learning skills are woven into our teaching in order to maintain optimal student engagement and learning. In this way, we maintain high, yet appropriate expectations, for all our learners.
