Trout in the Classroom

Trout in the Classroom (TIC) is an environmental education program where students learn about water conservation by raising trout from eggs to fingerlings.    Smith School is the only elementary school in West Hartford implementing this program, thanks to a West Hartford Foundation grant awarded to first grade teacher Lesley Callahan!

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection furnishes fertilized eggs and feed in a special cooling aquarium that will be set up to provide cold, clean, fresh water for the trout eggs.  Tracy Bennett, Smith School's science teacher will house the aquarium in the science lab, giving all children access to this great process.

This program will be adapted across the curriculum for all grades as students work together to monitor tank water quality, engage in stream habitat study, appreciate water resources, and understand ecosystem connectivity.  Teachers and students  will be responsible for daily maintenance and observation of the eggs.

At the end of the program in March, the young trout will be  released into a state-approved body of water .
