Smith School is dedicated to educating children about science. The crux of Smith's enhanced program is the students' weekly visit to the school's state-of-the-art science lab. Children from grade one through grade five spend at least 45 minutes a week, and kindergarteners spend at least 30 minutes a week, in the lab.

The science lab curriculum stems from West Hartford's required science curriculum. However, lab time is spent deepening and broadening the regular curriculum. The lab environment is conducive to a learn-by-doing and hands-on approach. It is an environment where students make real-world connections between what they learn in the classroom and life outside of school.

The lab houses much of the school's scientific equipment, such as compound and stereoscopic microscopes, live animal specimens, psychrometers, and thermometers. This arrangement allows everyone in the school access to and use of all the equipment available.

Children may come to the lab on their own to do individual projects based on their interests. A Lab Technician Crew and Recycle Team are opportunities available to all students. Parents as visitors or volunteers are always welcome!
