Primary, Secondary Color Sculptures
Kindergarten
and first grade students learn about
sculpture through paper assembly
techniques.
They also explore the color wheel.
The Visual Arts
program at Smith School is
organized around the four
components of Discipline
Based Art Education:
Art Production, Art History, Art
Criticism, and Aesthetics. Children in grades
K-5 attend Art class for one
hour each week. Our goal is to
develop visual literacy
as we take on the challenge of creative problem-solving.
Students produce
artworks through drawing,
painting, sculpture, and mixed media, including
printmaking, collage, and fiber
arts. These projects familiarize
children with the processes that
inform creative work in the visual
arts. Art history at Smith involves
the study of historical and contemporary
artists from around the world. Through exposure
to the techniques and motivations
of artists children gain a sense
of shared experiences and common
understanding.

Museum Express
is a collection of fine art
prints that circulates among the
elementary schools every year.
Each class spends time viewing
and discussing art works with
trained parent volunteers.
Teachers follow up on these
sessions with curriculum-related
activities in the classroom.
Each class has a portfolio to store
the works the children create in
Art class. The portfolio
helps us track the progress we
make throughout the year.
The work of every student is
displayed each spring in Smith's
annual art exhibition. Please
check back on this website and
The Spotlight for this
year's exhibition dates. I look
forward to seeing you there!
