Energy Conservation Challenge

A major West Hartford initiative will be on energy conservation and is presently underway as we hold an Energy Conservation Challenge in each school building in November. This purpose of this contest is to create a conscious awareness of the amount of electricity we can save by working together to watch the watts each and every day (hopefully transferring to the home). Look for an on-line Conservation Impact Survey that will also be available for each family and child to take as a homework assignment in the future.  It is our desire that caring for our precious earth will become a focus for our entire community. A website is being constructed and more detailed information will follow.

Principal’s Pride Wall!

Each month teacher’s will select a work sample from one student in their classroom.  The work sample will reflect that student’s individual academic accomplishment.  The work will be displayed on the bulletin board near the office for the entire month.  Students who are featured will also be recognized at our monthly Pride Assemblies and a letter will be sent home informing parents of their child’s achievement.  Student names will also be published each month in the Spotlight.  Be sure to check out our first Pride Wall Board which will be on display at the end of this month.

SECOND STEP
Helping Children Become Successful

As parents and teachers, we want our children to become successful, caring people who can handle life’s stresses in positive ways. Second Step, a program being taught in grades K through 5, teaches the skills that children need to get along well with others.

The students at Smith School have been learning about how to recognize feelings, manage difficult emotions, and follow a set of problem solving steps to deal with social situations.
Come learn more about the Second Step program and how, as parents you can help your children at home.
