Frisbee Champ Wows Smith School Students and Parents

Students and parents were treated to a spinning show on Tuesday, September 23 at Smith School when world champion Frisbee thrower Gary Auerbach from the Spinning Bees performed for the crowd. Thanks to an Artist in Residence grant awarded to Physical Education teacher Kathy Miller, and funding by the Foundation for West Hartford Public Schools, Auerbach is spending two days teaching the history and aerodynamics of frisbee, some basic skills, in addition to performing a variety of tricks.

Students viewed Auerbach's collection of Frisbees, including a red plastic disc, which a student had decorated with feathers in an effort to make Auerbach's Frisbees fly better, and an original tin plate from the Frisbie Pie Company of Bridgeport, CT.

The use of the new buzzer system at our school has caused a little confusion for some parents. Even though
we have a buzzer on two entrances, please note that we are still using the St. James entrance to the school during the school day from 8:30 a.m. – 3:20 p.m.  After school, feel free to enter the building using the side/driveway entrance.  The second door, which has commonly been referred to as the WHEE entrance, is unlocked until
6:00 p.m.  [Full Column]
