Class Pictures

Mrs. Russell loves books! She especially likes funny books! Her top picks: "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus", by Mo Willems, "Parts", by Tedd Arnold and "Alice the Fairy", by David Shannon!

Check them out for yourself!

It’s Clifford! Our famous class mascot!

Each Friday, I pick a name out of a tin. That child gets to take Clifford home for the weekend! He comes with bear stories, a coloring page and a journal for you to write about your adventures together.

This is a favorite classroom activity. Please help your child write in the journal (from the perspective of Clifford). We read the journal aloud each Monday. It is a great way for each child to share special things about their family with the class!

Partnership

by Gloria Weber Henbesst

You bring your child to me
And hope I’ll come to know,
How much your child means to you
Your trust in me bestowed.

You bring your child to me
With love and hope and pride,
Looking for a helping hand
A teacher who will guide.

You bring your child to me
And our partnership is clear:
To nurture and allow to bloom
A life we both hold dear.

You bring your child to me
A step toward letting go,
And trusting in our special plan
To help your child grow.

Looking forward to our parent-teacher partnership this year!

Fondly,

Jennifer Russell

Dear Families,

We have been so busy since our holiday break!  We started the New Year by setting goals for 2008! The kids did a great job brainstorming something they want to accomplish this year! (They were on display but are now in this folder for you to enjoy!) We worked on the mini-themes of snow, snowmen and winter clothes. We got ‘in-depth’ with the book, The Mitten by Jan Brett (a nice lead in to our current mammal unit), and we learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. The class talked about what they could do to help mankind. Each of their ideas won them a “Smith School Peace Prize” - proudly on display outside our classroom door.

As I mentioned above, we are now into our study of mammals. We have done a general overview on mammal characteristics (filled with cool SMARTBoard activities) and now will spend the next two weeks moving to the other kindergarten classrooms to study one mammal in depth (for us it is the whale, in Mrs. Botticello’s room it will be the bear and over in Miss G.’s room it will be the squirrel)!

Before the vacation we will celebrate the 100th Day of School – always a favorite day full of activities! We will be talking about friendship and people we love for Valentine’s (with some math snuck in there, too). We will be working with our Book Buddies on Valentine’s for the elderly in our area!
After the Winter Vacation we will be celebrating Read Across America Week (even Daisy the Reading Pig will be visiting – more details to come)! We will be talking about President’s Day and Dental Health (as February is Dental Health Month). We will also begin to talk about where we live – our addresses and phone numbers.

We thoroughly enjoyed our last trip to Westmoor Park! Fur, Feathers and Scales! Our next trip will be on Valentine’s Day! “Valentine’s is for the birds” will be our topic! Please make sure your child is dressed for the extended time outdoors!
On Friday, January 18th, one of my dear friends (a former parent in my class) and a budding author and illustrator came to visit us! Mr. Rosenthal-Baxter read some stories he has written. He had us draw some illustrations for one of his books! He read us some of his favorite stories! He inspired my young authors and illustrators! A treat for everyone!!!

Valentine’s Day
I am looking for two or three parents to come as we have our Valentine treats. Parents are asked to sit with children, assist in reading cards, assist with serving snack, help with clean up and assist with packing up for home.

Day: Thursday, February 14th
Time: 2:15 to 3:15

Can’t come in but want to help? No Problem!
Room Parents will be asking for help with snack for both days!
