2008   Summer Olympics

The 2008 Summer Olympics will be celebrated from August 8-24 at the Beijing National Stadium (some events, like soccer, will be held outside Beijing).  The Olympic Games were awarded to Beijing after an exhaustive ballot of the International Olympic Committee on July 13, 2001. The Olympic slogan “One World, One Dream” calls upon the world to unite in the Olympic spirit. Athletes will compete in 302 events in 28 sports. The Fuwa (mascots) consist of 5 different members that incorporate the fish Beibei, the giant panda Jingjing, fire Huanhuan, the antelope Yingying, and the swallow Nini.  The 5 Fuwa correspond with the 5 elements of China; water, metal, fire, wood, and earth. From April 14 to June 2007, 2.2 million tickets had been sold.

The torch relay will last 130 days and go 137,000 km, the longest distance of any torch relay.  The relay began March 24, 2008 in Olympia, Greece, traveled across Greece to the Athens Stadium and on to Beijing where the torch was carried to the top of Mt. Everest on a highway specially built for the relay.

Gymnastics in the Olympics is very competitive - even men compete.  They use rings, pommel horse, the high bar, and floor exercises.  Many women compete in floor exercises, bars, beam, and the trampoline.
