When: The 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM

West Hartford has an elected seven-member Board of Education which is required by State Statue and Town Charter to oversee public education. The Board’s major duties are to:

• set policies concerning education, organizational and financial matters
• monitor and evaluate the administration of its policies
• recommend annual operating and capital budgets to the Town Council.

Two examples of recent decisions made by the Board are the addition of an assistant principal for Smith School, and the addition of Spanish language instruction for Kindergarten through second grade.

Speaking at a meeting: Each member of the public wishing to speak may address the board at the beginning or end of each public meeting. If you would like to speak publicly about an education-related issue, plan to arrive at Town Hall before the meeting begins to sign up for an opportunity to speak. Each speaker is given 3 minutes. If you do not sign up, you will have an opportunity to speak before the end of the meeting.

Parking for the Meeting is Free. Parking is free at the parking lots at Town Hall. The lots have parking gates where you will need to take a parking ticket to enter the lot behind Town Hall. At 8: 00 PM, the gates will be lifted. If you leave the Board meeting before 8:00 PM, you should drive to the parking booth and tell the attendant that you were attending the Board of Education meeting and you will be able to exit without paying.

Can’t make it to the meeting? Watch meetings live on channel 5. The meetings are rebroadcast many times during the next two weeks, during both the day and evening on Channel 19.
