Working with Files
(click on the thumbnail to see a larger image)

  1. With FrontPage open, choose the file you would like to work on. If you have not imported your files yet, just create a new blank page to work on for now.

  1. Working with FrontPage is much like working with Word. There are a few differences however.

Toward the bottom of your screen you will see icons for "Design, Split, Code and Preview". Most people will work in the "Design" view unless you really WANT to learn HTML.

Preview does exactly what is says. It allows you to see the change you make and view things that will not show up in the design view such as animation.

  1. Go ahead and make the changes that you want on your page. A template has been applies that keeps the header and side navigations consistent throughout the site.

    Preview your changes.

  1. When you are ready to publish your changes to the server: File --> "Publish Site". If you do not see this, you may have to click the down arrow at the bottom of the menu. This can only be done after you have had your sub web set up on the server. You will receive an e-mail with your server site location.

  1. You will be prompted for the server address (which should be filled in if you are publishing from the same location that you imported the files), your user name and password.

Another option is to "View" --> "remote web site". In the lower left hand corner is a publish changed files option. Or you can right click on the file and choose "Publish Selected Files". Above that, right below the tabs is a drop down menu that gives you some options, one being to just list the files to publish. That way you will not forget to publish that great graphic you just added to your page.

There are usually at least 3 ways to accomplish the same thing. Obviously these pages reflect the way I prefer to do things. Feel free to find your own way!

A few tips:
  1. It is always better to use lowercase file nomenclature i.e.:  9_6_homework
  2. Only use letters and _ (underscore) – no spaces when naming your files or pages
  3. If you add a file, picture or attachment be sure to remember to publish them also
  4. Remember to close out of Front Page when you are finished, to be sure that you close the connection to the server.
