Unit 6.4 C.10
Explain the role of septic and sewage systems on the quality of surface and ground water.

Unit 6.4 C.11
Explain how human activity may impact water resources in Connecticut, such as local ponds, rivers and the Long Island Sound ecosystem.

1.) Identify a favorable environment for life
-water, shelter, source of energy, community of life, food web/chain

2.) Identify the major parts of working septic and sewage systems

Groundwater: Saturation Zone, Unsaturated Zone, Aquifer, Water Table, Groundwater, Runoff, Surface Water

Septic System (Individual Water Treatment): Septic Tank, Sludge Layer, Porous Pipe, Drain Field, Whole System Overview (House to ground, and back)

Sewer System: Pipes, History of Sewer Systems (Chicago) and Disease

Water Treatment Facilities (Urban Water Treatment – WEST HARTFORD): Primary Treatment, Secondary Treatment (Sand Beds or Bacteria), Tertiary Treatments (Chlorine)

3.) Analyze the differences and benefits of each water treatment option (septic and sewer) and their effect on groundwater and surface water.

4.) Identify the major types of Water Pollution (Runoff, Point, Non-point)
-Agricultural, Manufacturing, Pesticide, Urban pollutants

5.) Analyze and evaluate how small changes in water quality can affect aquatic environments.

6.) Evaluate the effect of the above objectives on water supplies, animal and plant life, and human behaviors.

7.) Identify and analyze the pros/cons behind desalination

8.) Formulate appropriate human actions to preserve water quality

1.) Performance Assessment:
Favorable Environment Lab

Bacteria is introduced to different water-based environments.

Watershed Detectives
A performance assessment where students must analyze and explain different water pollution scenarios.

2.) Runoff Pollution Activity

3.) Desalination Activity

4.) Freddie the Fish
