English: The letter to an author
moves to draft 2. Begin by filling out the
self-edit sheet. Then annotate (mark up) your draft 1. Feel
free to make a
real mess of it! Finally compose draft 2. It will
save you much time later if
you type draft 2 on the
computer (double-spaced, Times Roman, 12-point or
other plain font). Staple in this order: d. 2 on top,
self-edit sheet in the
middle, d. 1 on the bottom.

TOMORROW
Draft 1 of a process essay. Draft 1 is normally done in
handwriting. Write on only one side of a page so that you can
spread the essay out in front of you for revision.
Compose a letter to an author, living or dead, in which you
explain how his or her book changed your view of the world of
yourself. The length is eventually 2 1/2 pages typed double
spaced.
Select a fiction or nonfiction book that you have read (and
have not entered in this contest before). You should have strong
feelings about the work. Explore those feelings and how you
reacted the way you did during and after reading the book.
did the characters, conflict or setting mirror your life in
some way? What strengths or flaws do you share with a character
in the book? What did the book show you about your world that
you never noticed before? What surprised you about yourself when
you were reading this book? Why was this work meaningful to you
personally?
Your letter should be honest, conversational, and friendly,
using your natural voice. Do NOT summarize the plot. The author
already knows what happened. What the author doesn't know is how
the book affected you. Do not compliment the author, other than
to thank the person for writing the book. Gushing flattery does
not support your point.
There should be one or more specific quotes from the book to
support your generalizations, so you will have to relocate the
book. This is due Tuesday, so you have time.

this site to read some examples of past winning entries.
