A Small Little Box

A small little box

Sits on the countertop

Wrapped in old newspaper

With a used bow on top

It’s a pretty pitiful sight

But it’s addressed for me

It doesn’t seem real special

Oh, but what could it be?

It makes no sound when I shake it

And is not too heavy

And I don’t think it’s the key

To a new Chevy.

It’s from my dear boyfriend

Who hasn’t a cent to his name

And here it is Christmas

The gift looks really lame

Still it’s from him

Oh, but what could it be?

It’s my only present from him

And as he sits next to me

I reach for the gift

With a little doubt on my mind

Maybe a gift card

Was all he could find?

I pick up the gift

And the bow falls right off

I guess he forgot to apply tape

And he gives a little cough

I tear off the newspaper

And sadness it brings

It’s just a small little box

Fit for two cheap earrings.

Still I reach for the lid

No excitement bubbling inside

But he has a small paycheck

So I guess he has tried

I take off the lid

And to my surprise

A big smile emerges

And I look into his eyes

If there’s one thing I’d wanted

And only one thing

It is exactly what he’s given me

An engagement ring!

But how did he manage?

He’s as sly as a fox-

I guess I’ve learned that big things

Come in a small little box.
