A: acrostic poems

  • don’t rhyme
  • describe someone/something
  • line begins with the letter of the subject

B: blessing and prayer poems

  • meant to call on protection or good fortune for a subject
  • usually starts with may or let

C: Clerihew poems

  • about a celebrity
  • meant to poke gentle fun at them
  • celebrity’s name- ends last line
  • made up of couplets (2 lines that do not rhyme)
  • most lines begin with "may ..."
  • meant to settle things that aggravate you

D: poems of direct address

  • talks directly to another  person or thing
  • express deep feelings

 E: Epic

  •    a long narrative poem
  • celebrating the adventures and achievements of a hero
  •  traditions, mythical of historical parts of a nation

F: Fable

  • poetic story
  • composed: verse or prose
  • moral summed up at the end

G:  Ghazal

  • odd number chain of couplets
  • each couplet, its own poem
  •  few repeating phrases

H: Haiku

  •  3 lines
  • 5, 7, then 5 syllables per line
  • focus: nature

I: I Wish

  •  each line starts with " I wish"
  •  8-10 lines long

J:

K: Kyrielle

  • French form of poetry
  •  4 line stanzas
  •  each line has 8 syllables
  •  the last line of each stanza rhymes

L: Limerick

  •  5 lines long
  •  lines 1,2, and 5 rhyme
  • lines 3 and 4 rhyme

M: Minute Poetry

  •  rhyming verse
  •  12 lines, 60 syllables
  •  3 stanzas each stanza has 8,4,4,4 syllables
  •  lines 1, and 2 rhyme, lines 3, and 4 rhyme

N: Nonet

  •  9 line poem
  • 1st line has 9 syllables
  •  2nd, 8
  •  3rd, 7
  • ect.

O: Ode

  •  a poem that praises a person or thing

Q: Quatern

  • sixteen line French style
  • composed of four quadrants or stanzas
