Tapestry weaving is an important Mexican craft. In an attempt to integrate the arts with our six grade social studies program , tapestry design and weaving techniques have become part of our

textile program. 

 

objective : students will be introduced to a simple loom and how to dress it.

Students will design a 9"x12" tapestry and

will use 4 techniques from the weaving menu in that design. With the teachers direction the chosen techniques will be woven into their design and weavings completed.

   
The vejhegante is a creature out of

Latino culture (specifically Puerto Rico) a vejhegante is a costumed character who appears at Carnival.

He is the conscience of the people and tries to address the wrong things people in the community might

be doing. As part of our sculpture program students make sculpey masks which then are attached to decorated bodies and become relief

sculptures.

Objective :to become aware of the role art plays in other cultures and their customs.

to produce a facsimilie of a relief sculpture depicting a cherished latino character.

to become familiar with a new media sculpey.

to become aware of relief sculpture.
