HEALTH CURRICULUM IN A NUTSHELL
Kindergarten
· Recognize characteristics of a safe home and school, and identify
ways to prevent accidents and play safely.
· Identify and distinguish between substances that are safe and
unsafe for a healthy lifestyle.
· Recognize and respect differences and similarities in the ways
people think, act, learn, look, and live.
· Discover positive qualities in self and others.
Grade 1
· Demonstrate how to respond to emergency or unsafe situations.
· Define and identify alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and
differentiate between healthy and unhealthy use.
· Identify strategies that promote positive interpersonal skills.
· Recognize and respect differences and similarities in ways people
and families think, act, learn, look, and live.
Grade 2
· Define and practice good personal hygiene to promote healthy
living.
· Identify the physiological and behavioral effects of nicotine,
alcohol, and chemical dependency on individuals and their families.
· Practice respectful and responsible behaviors as a member of one’s
school community through learned skills and behaviors.
Grade 3
· Establish and maintain healthy eating habits and a physically
active life.
· Distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate interactions
with peers and adults, and identify ways to access help when needed.
· Describe the physical and behavioral effects of alcohol, tobacco
and other drugs, and develop strategies to avoid misuse of alcohol, tobacco
and other drugs.
· Identify similarities and differences between one’s thinking,
actions, appearance and lifestyles and those of others.
· Develop conflict resolution strategies.
Grade 4
· Identify the effects of drugs on one’s mind and body.
· Practice refusal and decision making skills.
· Determine the necessary procedures for basic first aid.
· Identify and practice strategies to improve one’s attitude and
interpersonal relationships.
Grade 5
· Describe physical, social and emotional changes that occur during
puberty.
· Identify cognitive, emotional and physical effects of alcohol,
tobacco and other drug use or misuse. Practice refusal skills to ensure
healthy lifestyles.
· Work cooperatively to develop positive attitudes, problem
solving, and coping skills while respecting the differences, similarities, and
the rights of others.
