Plagiarism and How to Avoid It - A Guide for Conard Students

© Hilary B.Price. Used with special permision of "King Features Syndicate"

  • Copying a paper from the web.

  • Using a friend’s paper.

  • Using a paper that was written for another class.

  • Copying a writer word for word without quotation marks.

  • Paraphrasing inadequately – changing just a few words
while keeping grammar and other aspects of the text the same.

  • Using another person’s ideas or facts without attribution.

  • It's wrong because...

  • It's cheating.  It's also lying, and it's usually stealing.

  • It insults your teacher, your fellow students and your school.

  • It deprives the true authors of credit for their work.

  • It deprives you of a part of your education.
(Doing your own work and thinking for yourself is how you learn.)

  • It prevents your readers or audience from discovering where to go for more information on the topic.

Now that you know how important it is to cite your sources, you probably got all the answers right.  But if you want to check the answers to both of the quizzes on this page, see a member of the Conard Library staff.
