Quest

Quest is a Schoolwide Enrichment Program for students in West Hartford’s elementary and middle schools. The program is staffed by certified teachers who are half time at each of the elementary schools and Bristow while full time at Sedgwick and King Phillip. There are three major components to the Quest Program: Art Quest, Math Quest, and the Enrichment Talent Pool.

Art Quest is a program for talented young artist in fifth grade. Students self-nominate themselves by submitting a portfolio of their art work. Approximately 30 students are accepted town-wide. Students meet after-school to extend their talent development in the visual arts.

The Enrichment Talent Pool is made up of students in Grades 4-8. The nomination process begins in May of third grade and then continues throughout middle school. Students are identified through a multi-criteria nomination process. A committee composed of the principal, curriculum specialist, school psychologist, Dr. Eastlake, the Quest Coordinator, classroom teacher and I meet to determine who will participate in the program. The selection criterion includes the Test of Cognitive Skills, taken in third grade, CMT Scores, District Reading Tests as well as performance data (classroom work samples) and anecdotal data from teachers who know the student. Teachers are asked to present samples of the student’s work and to comment about the student’s work, habits, learning styles and areas of interest.

Students in the talent pool are involved in activities based on research done by Dr. Joseph Renzulli from the University of Connecticut’s Gifted and Talented Research Center. Students participate in lessons that consist of materials, methods and instructional techniques that develop higher level thinking skills. In addition, students are encouraged to participate in independent or small group investigations. During these investigations students have the opportunity to become actual investigators of a real problem or creator of original visual, written or performing art piece.

The Quest Program touches the life of many Charter Oak students. If you have any questions about the Quest Program please feel free to call me at 860-233-8506 extension 120 or e mail me at Michele_Hadlock@WHPS.org.
