Global Studies

As we move into the 21st century it becomes increasingly important for children to appreciate the similarities and differences among all people. West Hartford's Social Studies curriculum provides the foundation for the Global Studies Curriculum. Students study our own culture and then explore the interdependence of other cultures.

Students study our country's history, geography, government, economics, language, music and art.

Other world cultures are studied and compared and contrasted with our country, exploring global connections and interdependence.

Geography is strongly emphasized as students learn to find their way around the world. The five fundamental concepts of Geography - location, place, relationships within places, movement and regions - provide a framework for instruction.

An understanding of citizenship in a democratic society is developed and practiced.

Technology plays an important role as students explore their world through the internet and speak electronically to children in other cultures, vicariously traveling the globe.

Partnerships with international organizations and programs such as Global Learn and the Peace Corps' World Wise Schools Program allow children to contribute to others and to understand global issues.
