Mission Statement
The mission of Braeburn Elementary School, as a child-centered community that continues to develop traditions of academic excellence and responsible citizenship, is to ensure that all children achieve their academic potential and experience the joy of learning.  We will accomplish this through a caring and challenging environment that recognizes and responds to each child's uniqueness and fosters compassion for other sand an awareness of the world.
Braeburn At A Glance

Braeburn was originally constructed in 1955.  Three building projects, the first completed in 1988, the second completed in 1996, and the third completed in 2000 added much needed space to the building, bringing the school to its present size.  Braeburn has twenty-one classrooms, an auditorium, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, a computer lab, a media center and instructional space for support personnel.

The school is located in a residential area of West Hartford, amid rolling hills and beautiful fields.  Indeed, the word brae is a Scottish term meaning a steep, a slope, or a hillside.

Enrollment has increased considerably, with our most recent student count exceeding four hundred children.  Braeburn has a full day kindergarten program and classes in grades one through five.  The staff supports an active before-school program featuring band, chorus, and orchestra. We also offer an after-school homework center, staffed by teachers and volunteers.

Several years ago the Braeburn community completed a site-based planning process. Working together parents and faculty members defined goals and objectives for our school. The mission statement, a result of the site-based planning effort, reflects the school community’s dedication to every child. Most recently, the faculty reviewed our site-based plans. Based on current data (including academic assessments, parent surveys and demographic information), we developed a school improvement plan.

Braeburn supports a complete educational program with an emphasis on core academics, fine and performing arts and physical education.  The support programs include a resource program, a learning center program, and services from the school psychologist, the social worker, the speech pathologist and the school nurse.  All of the children have opportunities to extend their learning through coordinated field experiences, guest speakers and artists, demonstrations and assemblies.  We take pride in the grade level sharing, a time when children at each grade level demonstrate their understanding of a focused area of study. The Braeburn art show, concerts and assemblies highlight work by our accomplished students.

The parent community is a vital part of our school community. Parents are actively involved in the parent teacher association, better known as PTB, parents and teachers of Braeburn. Parent volunteers provide enrichment and social activities for the entire school. Whether it is through volunteer efforts or participation in school activities, Braeburn parents are positive, contributing members of our school community.

We maintain high standards of academic achievement and personal responsibility for all of our students.  Students and staff work together to define the expectations for classroom behavior and to maintain a positive learning environment where we demonstrate respect and responsibility.
