The Pupil Services Support Staff at Aiken Elementary School includes a special education teacher, a speech-language pathologist, a school psychologist, and several part-time staff (a social worker, an occupational therapist, and a physical therapist).  When a student encounters learning and/or social difficulties that impede their academic success the pupil services team is available to assist teachers and/or the Student Success Team (SST) in developing strategies/interventions that can be employed by the classroom teacher.  If the student continues to make little or no academic progress, other more intensive interventions and strategies are employed.  If the student continues to make make little progress the Planning and Placement Team (PPT) may determine that it is necessary for the team to evaluate the student in order to determine their eligibility for special education services.  These evaluations or assessments may include intellectual ability, speech-language skills, academic/achievement, behavioral/social skills and fine and gross motor skills.  Throughout this process, parents are notified and are an integral part of the team.

Based on evaluation outcomes and subsequent PPT recommendations, the pupil services team provides services that are designed to meet the individual needs of special education students in order for them to be successful in the classroom.  In addition, the staff consults with classroom teachers on an ongoing basis to ensure student success in key areas:  academic, social, communication, and motor skills.  Please refer to the individual staff member sites for explanations of the particular services that each member may provide to the students.
