Immunization requirements are as follows:

When Should I keep my child home from School ?

Regular school attendance is necessary for optimal learning. However, a mere presence at school does not ensure effective learning. A child must be feeling well in order to maximize the learning experience. In addition, a child who is sick and comes to school may help to spread the illness to other students and staff. It is recommended that a child remain home if any of the following conditions are present.

    1. Temperature of 100 degrees or higher.
    2. The need for medication i.e. Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Motrin, ASA,

    3.   to keep temperature below 100 degrees.
    4. Vomiting and/or diarrhea with a loss of appetite and/or fever.
    5. A rash that is itchy and spreading and of unknown cause. The child may return to school after and evaluation by their health care provider.
    6. Acute pain that requires narcotic medication for relief.

Medical Screening Procedures

The approach to health in our society is referred to as WELLNESS. Along that theory, several screening procedures are done in school to assist the student in maintaining a personal level of wellness so that the educational process can take place in a smooth manner.

Vision screening is done at every grade level (K-5) during early fall. After two abnormal screenings conducted by the nurse, a referral form is sent home recommending that the child be seen by an eye doctor.

Hearing screening is done during late fall in all grades (K-5). After two abnormal screenings conducted by the nurse, a referral form is sent home recommending that the child be checked by a physician.

After winter vacation, scoliosis screening is performed in fifth grade during gym class. If there appears to be a problem, the school nurse will check a second time. If she still feels that a problem may exist, the student is then checked by Dr. Douglas MacGilpin, the medical advisor to the West Hartford Public School System. If he feels that there is a problem, he will fill out a referral form recommending that the child be examined by a doctor of the parent's or guardian's choice.

If you should have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the school nurse.
