Winter School Closings and Delays

In the event of bad weather conditions:

CALL The West Hartford Public School Source line at 233-2334.  The line is updated by 6:00 am (for delayed or canceled openings) and 10 am (for early dismissal).

LISTEN to WTIC (1080 AM/95.5 FM) in the morning for announcements of "NO SCHOOL" or "DELAYED OPENING" days in West Hartford. No School and Delayed Opening announcements are also on local television stations. The Education Center (523-3500) will have a recording before am and after 4:30 pm. The Hartford Courant Source Line number is 246-7000, source number 7246.

When there is a "DELAYED OPENING", ALL before school activities (Band, Orchestra, Choir) are CANCELED. BUS PICK UP will be DELAYED for the same amount of time (e.g. if school opening is delayed for 1 hour, bus pick up will be 1 hour later than usual).

If the weather forecast indicates that weather conditions may warrant an "EARLY CLOSING", parents should remain alert to that possibility and arrange to have someone at home to meet children, if possible. Through room parents, we attempt to contact you in the brief amount of time we are given in the event of an "EARLY CLOSING" due to a snowstorm or an unforeseen emergency.

WE WANT TO REINFORCE AND REMIND YOU:

  1. ASSUME YOU WON'T BE CONTACTED!
  2. Sit down with your family and review a "Family Emergency School Closing Plan":
  1. Give your child 3 to 5 homes to go to in the neighborhood, in a specific order.
  2. Show them where an extra house key is kept.
  3. Remind them to go to the designated home and to leave a note (in the mailbox, on the back door, etc.) as to where they have gone.
  4. ALL CHILDREN WILL BE SENT HOME. (Walkers will walk; bus students will board buses.)
  5. We will send all children home under most circumstances, but should an emergency arise where children absolutely cannot be dismissed, please know that we will then house your children safely at school.
  6. Please be alert to New England's unpredictable weather, and know your child will be sent home!
  7. Please take the time to have a "Snowstorm Drill" with your child, whether a Kindergartner or 5th Grader.
