Welcome to the King Philip Middle School web site!  I hope you find a variety of helpful information here to familiarize you with our dynamic school.

King Philip is a learning community of 1,000 students and more than 100 faculty.  Recognized as an outstanding middle school, King Philip educates sixth, seventh and eighth grade students, who are divided into nine and a half academic teams to create smaller, more intimate learning environments.  The team organization at KPM is designed to integrate students coming from six different West Hartford elementary schools and from other communities.  On team, students learn core academic subjects, language arts, math, science, social studies and world language.  Each year, teams plan special interdisciplinary learning programs around a common theme to demonstrate powerful learning links among various subjects.  In addition to core academics, students participate in a Unified Arts program consisting of art, health, literacy, music, physical education and technology courses.  The Quest Program for identified gifted students, and performance music options of Band, Choir and Orchestra round out KPM’s comprehensive educational offerings.

At King Philip, students choose from a variety of co-curricular activities including intramural sports, select music groups, drama, yearbook, a literary magazine, Student Council as well as a variety of clubs and social activities.

To foster good citizenship, King Philip recognizes students who demonstrate one of our six character traits of acceptance, caring, excellence, honesty, respect and responsibility with monthly awards.  In addition, each month teams nominate two Students of the Month to be recognized with certificates by me for their hard work and educational progress.

Parents are active partners in our learning community through the PTO, as volunteers and through frequent communication with team teachers.  Parent involvement is one of the strengths of King Philip Middle School.

The staff and I welcome you to call to arrange a meeting or a visit to our great school!

Warm Regards,

Michael Renkawitz
Interim Principal
