The Library Media Center
"Read, read, read," says Duff our school mascot! Welcome to our homepage. We love to read at Duffy, read more about us! Introduction to the Library Media Center: The Library Media Center works as a resource-based learning environment that encourages students to be efficient users of information technology and life-long readers. Hours: Open school hours, 8:35 - 3:20 p.m.. Wed., 8:35-2:00 p.m. Our regular schedule: Individual students may visit the library during the day with teacher permission. A book selection time, from 8:35-9:00 a.m., is available for all students. Grades K-1 visit for half hour sessions each week and have bi-monthly lab sessions. Grades 2-5* visit for one hour sessions each week. *Our flexible schedule: Teachers sign-up for additional library and computer time for class projects and research, as needed. Flexible time enables classes to use the library as a resource that integrates with the classroom curriculum beyond regularly scheduled times. **Library Procedures**
Library borrowing policy encourages good book care and student responsibility. Kindergarten students may borrow one book each week. Students in grades 1-5 may borrow two library books each week. Exceptions are made for students working on special projects and/or research, in which case they may borrow additional books. Reserve policy: If a student forgets to return his or her books at the scheduled library time, the library will hold a student's book choice until the next school day. In the case of misplaced, lost and/or damaged books, the library asks parents to please write a note, or contact the library regarding the situation. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

**Technology**
The Duffy Technology Committee is seeking ways to develop our website further, as well as, support classroom technology and the site based plan. The Library Media Center, includes 28 IBM student computers, two scanners, and interactive teaching stations with whiteboard and/or LCD technologies. Other ways technology is integrated through out the curriculum include: A portable Smartboard is available for teacher sign-out. To further integrate technology within the classroom setting, the Library Media Center provides a laptop with a traveling multi-media cart. Two AlphaSmart cart mobile units are used in the classrooms. Traveling clicker or remote control kits are available to enhance Interactive whiteboard technologies through out the building. Technology tools are one more important way to enhance learning at Duffy school. We continue to look for ways to integrate a variety of media and technology tools into the content areas to enrich learning.

**Curriculum**
The goal of the Library Media Center curriculum is to encourage and to engage students in reading for learning and for enjoyment, as well as, to use information and technology resources as critical thinkers. Lessons are created in developmental stages, at each grade level, so that students learn to locate, access, use, and evaluate information for their reading and for their learning needs. Primary grades focus on fiction and non-fiction literacy lessons and the fundamentals of technology use. Intermediate grade levels go further with the use of reference materials such as encyclopedias, almanacs, atlases, specialized dictionaries, and technology resources for specific learning purposes. Library information literacy, Super 3 and Big 6, lessons continue to develop with each grade level so that students learn multi-faceted literacy and research skills. The Library Media Center program strives to integrate skills and strategies with the classroom curriculum.
