District Goals 2007-2011

 

 

I.     Achievement – Advance achievement for all students in the academics, arts, health and fitness, and athletics and minimize the disparities among all groups of students.

 

The standards by which success will be measured by no later than June 2011…

 

q       Among students who have attended West Hartford Public Schools for three consecutive years, 90% will perform at the “proficient” level, and 78% (68% at grade 10) will perform at the “mastery/goal” level, and 34% will perform at the “advanced” level on the state mandated reading, mathematics, and writing assessments given in grades 3-8 and 10.

q       95% of our students who enter high school as 9th graders will meet the graduation competencies and requirements 4 years later.

q       60% of high school graduates who enter high school as 9th graders will successfully complete at least one Advanced Placement course during high school.

q       Students receiving special education services will master 80% of their Individualized Education Program (I.E.P) objectives and the percentage of special education students reaching proficiency on the state mandated reading, math, and writing assessments given in grades 3 – 8 and 10 will increase from 45% to 60%.

q       Performing groups and athletic teams will strive to reflect the diversity of our community and continue to achieve local, regional and national recognition for excellence.

q       The percentage of minority students reaching proficiency on the state mandated reading, math, and writing assessments given in grades 3 – 8 and 10 will increase from 73% to 85% and the percentage at goal will increase from 53% to 65% (35% to 45% at grade 10)

q       The percentage of economically disadvantaged students reaching proficiency on the state mandated reading, math, and writing assessments given in grades 3 – 8 and 10 will increase from 61% to 75% and the percentage at goal will increase from 36% to 50% (29% to 40% at grade 10)

q       To reduce the achievement gap, 80% of grade 4 – 8 students who perform below the goal level established by the state will make 1.5 years of academic growth for each subsequent year they are educated in the West Hartford Public Schools until they reach goal level.

q       90% of students entering Kindergarten will have had a preschool experience

 

II.    Safe Schools– Ensure a safe and orderly environment that promotes learning and respect.

 

q       90% of parents and teachers responding to a survey will indicate that schools are safe and orderly and students are well behaved.

q       The percentage of students in grades 5 –12 responding to a survey indicating that schools are safe and orderly and students are well behaved will increase by 5% per year.

q       The administration will report annually to the Board in the following areas:

o   Actions taken to create a culture of respect by applying school wide approaches to support positive student behavior

o   The number and nature of suspensions and expulsions in our schools

o   An assessment of the security initiatives and needs in each of our schools

 

III.  Parent and Community Engagement – to promote the value of education in a welcoming school environment.

 

q       95% of all parents of K-5 students and 95% of parents of students with academic difficulties in grades 6 –12 will participate in parent conferencing.

q       90% of parents responding to a survey will indicate that schools communicate effectively, are welcoming, and adequately address the learning needs of their child(ren).

q       The administration will report annually to the Board on the number and nature of parent and community involvement in volunteering, mentoring, and internships in our schools.
