Frequently Asked Questions About Second Step

 

 

Is this unit new?

This is not a new unit for elementary schools but a revised one. The previous unit was called Healthy Personal  Interactions. The updated unit is called Building Healthy Relationships. In this revised unit all schools will use materials called Second Step.   Second Step is a curriculum that helps students practice positive social skills.

 

What are the three main components of Second Step?

  1. Empathy-Children learning to recognize their own feelings and others’ feelings and ways to show understanding and caring.

  2. Impulse control and problem solving-Children learn to solve problems and practice skills, such as calming down, apologizing, interrupting politely and resolving conflicts

  3. Anger management-Children learn to manage their anger in ways that do not hurt others

 

What skills will my child practice?

K-dealing with having things taken away

How is this different from other initiatives already used?

 

This is a curriculum approach that is based on concept that empathy can be taught and learned.

 

One lesson is taught per week

 

There is:

Modeling in the class

Practice in the class

 

But Most Importantly

Transfer of learning. The skills are practiced and reinforced throughout.
