The West Hartford K-12 Health Education Program offers a foundation
of functional health information and skills so that students develop
healthy, active lifestyles and become health literate. Health
literacy means students can apply critical health skills and
knowledge in their own daily lives. These health skills include
accessing information and resources, self management, analyzing
influences, using interpersonal communication skills effectively,
making healthy decisions, applying the goal setting process, and
advocating for self and others. Health literacy means have
students have current health, accurate information in a variety of
topics. Topics include injury and disease prevention, alcohol,
tobacco, and other drugs; human growth and development; injury and
disease prevention; mental and emotional health; nutrition and
physical activity; and human sexuality. Our curriculum provides
sequential, spiraling, enjoyable and successful experiences
appropriate with each student’s developmental stage and ability
level.
