Powerschool Information

Four years ago, the West Hartford Public Schools began using a new student information system called PowerSchool. As we have integrated more and more features of the program into use, we have had time to identify operating issues and any difficulties that arise. We are pleased that a pilot of the Parent Portal feature began on Monday, April 25, 2011, for the parents/guardians of our grade 6-12 students. This Parent Portal is an integrated tool that allows parents to use any computer with Internet access to view specific information about their children, including items such as attendance, assignments, and grades. We believe that this tool will further enhance the communication between parents and teachers. Parents who do not have Internet access at home can visit any branch of the West Hartford Public Library.

Please discuss any grading issues or concerns about students with your child’s teacher directly, and allow teachers time to respond. We believe that this will be an effective communication tool for everyone. The parent and school partnership is vital in educating all of our children; this tool will aid you in discussing your child’s progress directly with them in a meaningful way.

Student Drop-Off and Safety Info

The safety of our students is our highest priority, and you can help to make sure that we maintain a safe environment by following the correct procedures when dropping students off in the morning. I am concerned that parents are parking their cars in the drop-off zone which causes others to drop off their students in the middle of the road. The drop off zone is located on the east side of Wardwell Ave. between the two driveways into the staff parking lot, between the hours of 7:30 AM and 8 AM. Parking is allowed anytime beyond the second driveway alongside the baseball field on the east side of Wardwell. Please be sure to adhere to the following procedures when dropping your children off in the morning.

  • Do not drive through the parking lot to drop off your students. Children use walkways that pass through the parking lot and driving through the lot puts those children in danger.
  • Do not drop students off on Sedgwick Road. Sedgwick road is a high volume road and is posted as “no stopping”. When you stop to let someone out, you block a lane of traffic causing a dangerous situation.
  • Do not drop students off on the west side of Wardwell Ave. It is a no parking zone and you may be ticketed. Students are in danger when they cross the street with traffic moving through the area.
  • The correct place to drop your students off is on the east side of Wardwell Ave. between the two driveways to the staff parking lot. Please pull forward as far as you are able to allow those behind you to access the drop off zone.
  • Do not park in the drop off zone between 7:30 A.M. and 8 A.M. as that causes congestion and results in other vehicles letting children off in the middle of the street.

The West Hartford Police Department works closely with our security guards and teachers to monitor this area. When anyone violates the above safety procedures, they can and will be ticketed. So please help us keep our students safe. If everyone follows the procedures, things will go smoothly in the morning and the chance that one of our students will be seriously injured is greatly diminished.

If you are attending an early morning meeting at the school, you may park along the east side of Wardwell Ave. alongside the baseball field. If you need to use the handicap parking space, please identify yourself to any staff member on duty and proceed cautiously to the handicap parking area in the staff parking lot.

In addition to following our safety procedures, please understand that teachers on duty are doing their best to manage traffic and look after the safety of your children. Please be courteous to them and follow their directions. We do not want anyone to be injured because we are in a hurry. Thank you for your help in keeping Sedgwick a safe school.

Helping Hands

Helping Hands Program

Helping Hands is a SMS program where Sedgwick families assist other Sedgwick families who are experiencing difficult times or have exceptional needs during the Holiday Season. This program has been successful in the past years because many families share their resources with those in need. We hope that you will welcome the opportunity to make a positive difference for a child and/or family in your own school community by making a donation to the Helping Hands program. ALL gifts will remain anonymous and all names of the recipients will be kept confidential.

You can process your donation on line using the donation button at the bottom of the page. Gift cards and checks made out to Sedgwick Middle School are also welcomed.

If you have any questions please contact either Christine Welch-Meier at (860)929-5312 Christine_Welchmeier@whps.org or Renee Kleinman at (860)929-5313 Renee_Kleinman@whps.org. All donations are tax-deductible.

We look forward to working with you and making this a joyous holiday for all of our families.

Cyber Compass

The CyberCompass initiative is a townwide response to the unprecedented advancements in technology that have a significant impact on the lives of West Hartford’s children and their families. This website serves as a clearinghouse of resources for parents, educators and children to turn to in their efforts to educate themselves, to raise awareness of the advantages and dangers associated with the use of diverse technologies, and to provide age and educationally appropriate guidelines to maximize instruction and prevent children from being harmed in a 24/7 connected world.
