Mentor Guidelines


Here are some guidelines for helping students at various stages of the process and for communicating with teachers.


  • keep students focused on the lines of inquiry/key concept questions

  • find “kid-friendly” articles and websites

  • discuss “tough-to-read” articles—break it down

  • make contacts with professionals/set up interviews

  • look at student documents and see how they’re doing with recording information

  • send comments/emails to students when applicable


Options include, but are not limited to: PhotoStory, Prezi, VoiceThread, Glogster, Google Presentations, dramatic presentation, debate, interview, visual arts, written piece, music, etc.

  • guide students in planning for the presentation (layout, storyboard, script, etc.)

  • check accuracy of facts

  • work with students and Craig on creating presentation

  • proofread for grammar, spelling, readability

  • student voiceovers – loud, clear, with expression

  • practice presenting

Display Board

  • contents “tell the story” of the project elements

  • includes IB elements used in the project (reflections can be strengths or weaknesses)

  • presentation – straight lines, appealing, cut cleanly, legible

  • proofread


  • accurately represent the topic being discussed

Two-Minute “Wrap”

  • accurately sums up the project for someone who has no knowledge of the subject

  • practice – students speak clearly, with expression and enthusiasm


  • brainstorm possible action ideas

  • arrange any contact/meetings with organizations

  • help with organization/timeline

  • keep it simple

Next Steps

  • each student commits to a task at the end of each meeting

  • mentor communicates each child’s task with student and teacher
