Our Mission is to inspire and prepare all students to realize their potential and enhance our global community.

March 23, 2015

We had a few issues this past week with the screening and fencing being blown down twice in 50+ mph winds and the tree hitting the gym as it was being removed. We have undergone a safety audit and review with Fusco and town officials and the following safety changes are being implemented:

  • Daily review of the site perimeter including checking sidewalks for debris and to verify that the fencing is in good condition

  • Utilizing a spotter at the construction entrance gate to assist with incoming deliveries and departures

  • Fusco representatives will be present and monitor the fence line along the existing school building during the morning drop off and afternoon pick up to ensure that no construction activities are being conducted in that area that might place students, staff and parents/guardians in danger

  • New screening will be installed this week with more secure straps and better wind resistance

  • Fusco's Director of Safety will increase the frequency of his site visits and observation and recommendation reports

  • Fusco field staff will participate more frequently in sub-contractor daily safety briefings. Subcontractors are required to perform daily briefings to review the work that is planned for that day and to identify associated safety hazards and implement methods to mitigate them.

  • Weekly safety talks will be introduced with the purpose of establishing a safety discussion with specific subcontractor and their crew. This provides a venue for all workers to discuss what they see on site, request safety improvements that need to be made and share learning experiences from past projects

  • BOE Assistant Superintendent Andrew Morrow will have office hours one afternoon a week at the school to meet with parents regarding safety concerns - exact day and time to be determined.

There will be a continuous effort to create and maintain a culture of safety.  Fusco has assured us that this is an essential component of their corporate philosophy and they are committed to achieving it every day.

Despite the few setbacks of last week, we did accomplish the following:

  • Tree removal for phase 1 of the construction is complete

  • Topsoil removal has begun

  • Selective demolition began of site structures (playground foundations, benches, retaining walls, etc.)

  • Water connection on Flatbush Avenue for the construction trailers was completed

  • Water connection on Flatbush Avenue for the construction trailers was completed

  • Anti-tracking pads for the construction entrances at Flatbush and Oakwood Avenues completed

Planned activities for the next week or two include:

  • Begin installation of new water services from Sidney Avenue to the new and existing school.. This will require trenching into Sidney Avenue and will be done outside the morning drop off and pick up.

  • Begin installation of the temporary sanitary sewer line from Flatbush Avenue to the existing building.  This will require trenching into Flatbush Avenue and will done outside of the morning drop off and pick up.

  • Continued installation of utilities to for the Fusco construction trailers expected to arrive next week.

As a general note, construction crews may be working into the early evening hours in order to accomplish some of this work in order to minimize disturbing the school day.
