Thank you to the Foundation for West Hartford Public Schools for providing funding for the
Virtual Vistas grant. This grant will provide funding for Smith and Charter Oak to purchase high definition video conferencing equipment and a projector, as well as video conferencing subscriptions.
The purpose of the grant is to "enhance and enrich the curriculum at both schools" by providing a means for students, faculty, and families in the school communities to work with other professionals and interact with experts from museums, research and science centers.
Smith STEM School began using the video conferencing equipment in September 2013 as the fifth graders learned about the moon. We connected with the NASA Digital Learning Network or DLN, which has reached close to one million students and teachers with videoconferences and webcasts that feature NASA-related science, technology, engineering, and mathematics instruction.
