Board Of Education

West Hartford has an elected seven-member Board of Education which is required by State Statute and Town Charter to oversee public education.

Graduation Requirements


I.  Introduction

To graduate from West Hartford Public Schools a student must have satisfactorily earned the minimum units of credit as outlined within the credit distribution requirement and met performance standards for literacy, mathematics, and science.

IIa. Credit Distribution (Class of 2020, 2021, and 2022): The following credits must be earned: 21.75 total units

Arts and/or Technical Education

Social Studies

   inclusive of 1 unit in U.S. History



   inclusive of 1 unit in World Civilization

Physical Education & Health

   inclusive of 1.5 units of Physical Education

   inclusive of 0.25 units of Health Education

1.75 units

IIb. Credit Distribution (Class of 2023 and thereafter)The following credits must be earned: 25 total units



   4 units of English

   3 units of Social Studies

      inclusive of 1 unit of US History

      inclusive of 1 unit of World History

      inclusive of ½ unit of American Government / Civics

   1 unit of World Language

   ½ unit of the Arts

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

   3 units of Mathematics

   3 units of Science

      inclusive of 1 unit of Physical Science

      inclusive of 1 unit of Life Science

Physical Education and Health

III.  Discipline-based Performance Standards

A.  Literacy: Students shall, prior to completion of their senior year, demonstrate competency in literacy skills, including reading comprehension, writing, and critical thinking.

B.  Math: Students shall, prior to the completion of their senior year, solve problems, explain their reasoning, and justify solutions in writing.  Students will also demonstrate procedural fluency and conceptual understanding of core mathematical content.

C.  Science: Students shall, prior to the completion of their senior year, successfully demonstrate the ability to apply the Science and Engineering practices. 

Upon recommendation of the high school principal and approval of the Superintendent of Schools, a requirement for graduation may be met, in part, on an equivalency basis as designated in the administrative regulations.

Upon graduation, each student who has met these requirements will be presented with a high school diploma.
