Board Of Education

West Hartford has an elected seven-member Board of Education which is required by State Statute and Town Charter to oversee public education.

Administration of Medicines by School Personnel


A school nurse or, in the absence of such nurse, a properly trained and appointed representative (Connecticut-licensed practical nurse, principal or any teacher) may administer medicinal preparations to any student as the result of a written order of a physician, dentist or an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) and the written authorization to do so of a parent or guardian of the student.

 

The authorized administration of medicinal preparations by a Connecticut-licensed practical nurse, school principal, or any teacher shall be under the general supervision of the school nurse.

 

The school nurse, Connecticut-licensed practical nurse, principal, teacher, or other persons covered by CT State Statute who has had training in safely administering the medication shall not be liable to a student, parent or guardian for civil damages for any injuries which result from acts or omissions in administering such medicinal preparations which may constitute ordinary negligence.

 

Secondary students who meet the requirements of paragraph one (written order and written authorization) will be allowed to carry and administer to themselves asthma medication by inhaler and/or insulin.

All authorization forms for administering medicinal preparations shall be for the current school year only.The school shall keep a record of the administration of all medicinal preparations.

 

Where applicable, the school shall only keep a maximum of forty-five (45) day supply of a medication for a student.

 

All medicinal preparations shall be kept under lock and key in the school nurse's office.
