Healthy Food Initiative
The West
Hartford Board of Education has chosen to follow the State
of Connecticut Healthy Food Initiative. All foods and
beverages sold to students in school buildings during the
school day must meet established standards for fat,
saturated fat and trans fat, added sugar, and portion size.

At all schools,
breakfast and lunch meals will, when averaged over the
course of a week, meet the Dietary Guidelines for
Americans. Fresh fruit will be offered daily, fresh
vegetables will be offered a minimum of two times per week,
and whole grains will be offered at least three times per
week. Beverage choices will be limited to low fat flavored
or unflavored milk, 100% fruit juices, and water. A choice
of two fruits and/or vegetables will be offered for sale a
la carte each day including but not limited to fresh fruit,
canned fruit in fruit juice or light syrup, 100% fruit
juice, fresh vegetables, or cooked vegetables.
At elementary schools,
a la carte packaged snacks will be sold at a limitation of
one snack per day, and will meet the following standards:

Total fat less than or equal to
7 grams
·
Saturated fat and trans fat
combined less than or equal to 2 grams
·
Added Sugar - no
more than 35% by weight
At middle and high
schools, a la carte packaged snacks will meet the following
standard:

combined less than or equal to 2 grams

than 35% by weight
West Hartford School Breakfast
A breakfast program is
offered at King Philip, Sedgwick, Wolcott, Webster Hill,
Smith, and Charter Oak. The breakfast meal consists of an
entrée, fruit, and 8-ounce milk. The cost is $1.25. For
those students who receive free or reduced-price meals the
breakfast is free. Entrées are offered on a rotating basis
and include cereal with toast, bagel, muffin, breakfast
sandwich, pancakes, French toast, boiled egg with raisin
toast.
