Changes to the School Day

Due to emergencies, such as inclement weather, electrical outages, and other unforeseen circumstances, it is sometimes necessary to make changes to the school day for the safety of our students. Please take the time before an emergency arises to develop a contingency plan in the event of a school delay, early dismissal, or cancellation and discuss it with your child. Identified below are multiple information sources that will provide you with changes to the school day; CT Weather Center Cancellations Website, WHPS Source Line, Transportation Hotline, WHPS School Alert System  or Radio and Television stations.

Parents are reminded that regardless of the exact timing of a storm occurring during the school day, the early dismissal schedule is as follows: high school students will get out at 11:00 a.m.; middle school students will get out at 11:45 a.m., and elementary schools students will get out at 1:00 p.m. These early dismissal times will not vary.

WHPS Source Line:  233-2334

Transportation Hotline:  586-8166

The West Hartford Public Schools provide a special Transportation Hotline phone number—586-8166.  Call to hear an announcement about changes to the bus schedule due to weather or other factors.

Also, if a parent has a question about an individual bus delay, the best way to obtain up-to-the-minute information regarding a school vehicle’s location is to contact Durham School Services directly at 523-9317 or 523-9675, as their office has direct two-way radio communication with their drivers.  Parents who have children attending out-of-district schools should contact Specialty Transportation at 947-2020.

 WHPS School Alert System

The WHPS School Alert System is a new service which allows parents to sign up and be automatically notified on their digital phone or alpha numeric pager any time the District broadcasts information concerning changes to the school day.  Users can sign up if they have a digital cell phone with text messaging capability or an alpha-numeric pager (click here for details on cell phone and pager providers).  The School Alert System is an adjunct system designed primarily for those who may not have ready access to other information sources during the work day.  The WHPS Source Line, Radio and TV announcements, and listings on the CT Weather Center Cancellations website will still provide information as before.
