  • The West Hartford Public School community is excited to offer four full-day prekindergarten programs for West Hartford residents. 
  • Children who will be 4 years old on or before January 1st of the intended school year are eligible to apply.  Applications are made available the school year prior.  Enrollment is based on a lottery system.  
  • Tuition is assessed on a sliding scale based on gross yearly income.

The four elementary schools listed below house the prekindergarten programs for children in West Hartford.

Determine which school you can apply to below:

If you live in the Aiken, Braeburn, Duffy, Morley, Norfeldt, Whiting Lane or Wolcott neighborhood, your child is eligible to apply to the prekindergarten program at Charter Oak OR Smith.

If you live in the  Charter Oak or Smith neighborhood, your child is eligible to apply to the prekindergarten program at Charter Oak OR Smith.  You will automatically be entered in the Bugbee School lottery.

If you live in the Webster Hill neighborhood, your child is eligible to apply to the prekindergarten program at Charter Oak, Smith OR Webster Hill.

If you live in the Bugbee neighborhood, your child is eligible to apply to the prekindergarten program at Charter Oak, Smith OR Bugbee.

Applications will be available by the end of October. Each school holds an informational session in early December. You are able to apply for one of the prekindergarten programs.

Kindergarten Registration and Child Activity Meetings


Each elementary school will be hosting an informational parent meeting with subsequent child activity days in the next three months.  

Please contact your elementary school to  learn more about the upcoming transition events.

School Readiness Applications

The West Hartford School Readiness Council is currently accepting applications from community early care providers to participate in our School Readiness Program.  The School Readiness Council will contract with sites to provide high-quality education to families that meet income eligibility.   For more information or to receive an application contact Mary Stone at (860) 561-6635 or mary_stone@whps.org.
